Mr. Rufo Munene continues to exemplify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences’ mission of blending academic excellence with real-world impact.
As a lead researcher on a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded project (2020–2025), Mr. Munene has been working to enhance women’s livelihoods, increase labour force participation, and improve child development through a pioneering crèche programme in Tharaka Nithi County—a project now nearing completion.
His expertise has also been sought in developing key policy frameworks, including the Tharaka Nithi County Culture and Heritage Policy (in partnership with the Institute for Culture and Ecology and the County Government) and the Tharaka Nithi County Agro-ecology Policy.
Beyond policy work, Mr. Munene is deeply committed to student development. He has successfully linked students to attachment and internship opportunities with organisations such as Compassion Kenya, CARITAS, and the Red Cross, and is actively exploring MOUs to strengthen these partnerships. He also engages his students in outreach programmes with UNBOUND Kenya, supporting vulnerable households to chart their own paths out of poverty.
His scholarly work is equally impactful—his recent publication, When Communities Are Part of the Problem in Community-Based Inclusive Development, appeared in Springer Nature Link, one of the most prestigious academic platforms globally.
The Faculty is proud to celebrate Mr. Munene’s dedication to research, teaching, and community transformation—proof that the classroom and the community are powerful partners in creating lasting change.
